Every solar term my teacher Shirley Chong from Chinese Herbal Pantry share indepth information on these solar terms. It is so fascinating.

My eldest daughter complained about a dry throat and she is also starting to cough. So time to dig deeper into this matter and provide some healthy foods for my family.

The lungs are very delicate organs, because it is the only organ that connects the outside world through the nose and throat and it hates dryness.

I noticed that the Li Qiu has started between 7 - 9 August. It is not late to still follow the season eating.

First we need to clear and then we can start nourishing. We should never skip this part.

Imagine you have a storage room that has mold in it, you should not put your new harvest into that storage room, first you need to clean the place. In our body we need to clear the heat and dampness, due to the change from summer to autumn, it creates condensation (also known as dampness).

If you skip this phase and go straight into heavy nourishing your Spleen won’t be able to process them. This leads to ‘food stagnation’ causing bloating and sluggishness. It is like piling the fresh on top of mold.

We can use the following ingredients to help us clear the heat and dampness inside our body.

The first five days we focus on using clearing foods such as white radish, winter melon, and lotus root. This gentle clears residual heat and dampness to create a clean foundation.

You can find these at the local Chinese stores.

<a Lifting her arm was a VAS 8 — on a pain scale where 10 is the worst pain imaginable, that’s severe. Ofcourse it is important to know and see what the situation is, so we recorded the before situation and she received coaching on the movement. Studying at ACHE Research we have this saying ‘No Pain, No Gain’. As you can see, you don’t have a visual of her face and there is the pain ( VAS 8) was.

The second video is the same session, less than one hour later after a full body tuina session. Full overhead extension. No hesitation, no wincing. She was laughing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a reader-supported publication. Some patterns resolve in one session; others take longer, and some need more than movement work alone.

For me it is important to know what the cause of this injury was. To understand the cause and also give back to the client, so they can be more careful next time. It is a learning curve.

In her case the cause of this shoulder pain, was due to a physical injury, she pulled a heavy bed with all her power. She suffered for 2 weeks. After the assessment with stretching (dao yin movements) she also received a full body tuina session to release her body from tension.

She has a physical intense job and stress as well. So tuina (Chinese Medical Massage therapy) helped her to relax her muscles and tendons. In general clients after doing a movement assessment to see what the range of movements is, I encourage people to do the exercises at home, so they can self heal themselves. If there is no significant change after the movement, then I do a full tuina body session, especially for first time clients, to relax everything so that the muscles and tendons can relax to improve qi and blood circulation.

That’s the difference between managing a symptom and resolving what’s underneath it.

You don’t have to wait for a flare-up like this

I offer 1-on-1 sessions in the South of France as part of the retreat Dr. Sara Pugh and I are hosting this October — six days in the French Pyrenees, combining TCM, Daoist movement, therapeutic cooking, and Quantum Biology. If you’re curious what a session like this could do for something you’re carrying — a shoulder, a knee, a lower back that’s never quite right — this is a chance to find out, in person, with time to actually work through it properly.

We have 20 spots. 9 are already filled through my co-host — 11 are still open.

3–10 October 2026, French Pyrenees.

Book a Zoom call if you’d like to hear more, send an email to info@chunli.nl

Subscribe now

First test retreat in Shanti Sagar

a taste of TCM in a natural environment in the Netherlands

Chun Li Lee

What happened at Shanti Sagar last week

Thursday, my daughter and I went to Shanti Sagar for a few days. It’s a small guesthouse run by “Helende Herberg”, Healing Inn where people go when they need a break. I was introduced to the owners a while back, a couple who are genuinely warm, caring people, and I’ve visited a few times since. This time I wanted to try something: a mini retreat.

Last year I offered free chair massages there and gave a short introduction to ACHE Research. People still remember the exercises I taught them for lower back pain. That stayed with me.

This time I went further. I gave a basic TCM course combined with TCM nutrition, and a lecture on transforming limiting beliefs.

We talked about food, really talked about it. How cutting cold raw food, dairy, or gluten could improve your stools within days. I say “could,” because everybody is different, and the honest answer always starts with a diagnosis. How warming foods support digestion. How the right food can ease a sore throat or warm you when you’re cold.

If only you knew what to eat, and when.

Education is the key here, real education, from someone who studied it. So be careful of well-meaning people telling you “this is very healthy for you.” Ask them back: how do you know it’s good for MY body? Are you my therapist? What’s your diagnosis, based on what symptoms? They mean well. Everybody wants to help. But are we really helping without diagnosing first?

I explain all of this in plain language, mostly through case studies from my clients, theory means more when you can see it land somewhere real.

After the lecture, we split into groups. Some went to the organic garden to harvest, some cooked, some cleaned up. Like a small community, for a few hours. I loved it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" offered three 1-on-1 sessions as a trial, just to see what was possible in that setting.

One woman had been carrying a deep fear of losing her daughter. We worked for almost two hours. By the end, the fear was gone. The change showed on her face, the host saw it too, said her whole energy had shifted. Instead of “I need to protect her, save her, control this,” she could finally say: it’s her life now.

Another guest had been carrying years of anger toward a parent, feeling like he was never good enough, always at fault, even long after that parent was gone. After the session, that anger simply wasn’t there anymore. He understood, instead, that his parent had never known better either. The next day, the peace was still there. He was laughing. The hosts told him he looked years younger, the tension in his face was gone.

A third guest had carried old family wounds in silence for years, staying quiet to keep the peace. After our session, she said: “I can see she has her own suffering too.” Something in her that had been fighting for so long finally softened. She felt strong instead of embattled.

I can’t take credit for “fixing” anyone. What I do is help people find what’s already stuck, and give it somewhere to move.

Why this works — and why I built it this way

I’ve spent years working through my own limiting beliefs and old patterns, Psych-K, Psychomancy, hypnotherapy, family constellations, regression therapy, and the work of people like the HeartMath Institute, Gregg Braden, Bruce Lipton, and Joe Dispenza. I took what actually worked for me and shaped it into a method that, for most clients, creates real change in a single session.

But the method isn’t the point. Independence is.

One of my clients had 35 sessions with me in 2024, tuina, acupuncture, movement, belief work. In 2025, she needed 15. In 2026, she’s needed zero. That’s the outcome I’m working toward with every client: not dependency, but self-sufficiency.

She told me: “Nancy, last time I had knee pain, I did the knee movement for half an hour and it subsided. When my lower back hurts, I do the qigong and it’s gone. My shoulder, these movements, and it’s fine.”

That’s the whole point. Movement you can do anywhere. Even my own kids, 7 and 10, know what to do when they’re cold, they do their spinal stretches and warm right up. I think everyone should know this. The same goes for food: everyone should understand the basic thermal properties of what they eat, so they can support their own constitution, instead of following whatever the internet is selling them, with no diagnosis behind it.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a reader-supported publication. I’ve had that happening a lot these past few weeks, and it keeps getting stronger.

It started after my trip to China last May. That trip inspired me.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a reader-supported publication. Almost every corner has a shop selling herbal soups, wonton soup, noodles, or healing drinks. Compare that to Holland — bakeries, supermarkets, snack bars with fries and burgers, pizza places, cheese shops, fish shops. No soup shops. No fresh steamed buns. I miss it.

Where the idea came from

Travelling with Professor Leung, Dr. Sara, and visiting Professor Lu’s clinic in Guangzhou is what sparked this.

Professor Leung specializes in Quantum Medicine and self-healing through altered states of consciousness.

Professor Lu and his wife run four clinics offering acupuncture, tuina, cupping, and Chinese herbal medicine — with their own herbal shop that brews the soup for you. You just show up and drink it warm.

That got me thinking: how great would it be to bring a small group of people to China to actually experience this health culture firsthand — not a regular holiday, but a healing one?

What it could look like

A private driver picks you up from the airport. In the morning, you do exercises at sunrise Healthy breakfast nearby.

After settling in, Professor Lu guides the group through a Western medical check-up, so everyone understands their current health status. Then a TCM check-up follows pulse, tongue diagnosis with treatment options like acupuncture, tuina, cupping, or a personalized herbal formula, brewed and ready to drink at the clinic’s herbal shop.

Rest days in between treatments are for sightseeing museums, nature parks, hiking, or just wandering with a private driver, no stress about traintickets, traffic, or crowded metros.

Ideal rhythm: treatment every other day, over two weeks.

One thing I’ve wanted to experience for years, a TCM restaurant, where the doctor checks your pulse and tongue and then prescribes your meal. I’d love to bring that idea home too, maybe as a cook-together reunion after the trip.

What it might cost

Rough numbers from what I’ve seen (prices fluctuate, don’t hold me to them):

Flight: from €450-€800

Accommodation: fully equipped apartments from €13/night

Medical check-up: up to €200 depending on your health status and choice

TCM treatment (Professor Lu’s clinic): from ~€20 per session

Private driver: 700 RMB/day for a 6-seater, split among the group

Meals: a bowl of wonton noodles with a drink runs about €3–4, versus €15–40 for a regular meal here

For context: an Uber from Schiphol to my place (15 minutes) costs me €50.

The pitch

Travel with a small group of open-minded people. Eat well, talk, laugh, try new food, get a real medical check-up, take herbal medicine to boost your system, train together, learn to cook healthier, enjoy nature, and revisit Dan Lu Shan.

I already have 3 people on board. Looking to keep the group small — one or two cars, or a minivan. Planning for April/May 2027, once we find the cheapest flights.

Interested? Please try it out and I would love to hear your comments or narratives.

It has been quite challenging to build an app, because I had to find some late hours to work on it, besides my daily life, with kids and practice and training.

But the first design is there, I kept it very simple, this is part of my thesis using kitchen medicine for early stages of common cold. I still need to adjust and add the Western Herbs.

As a Chinese and a Chinese Herbalist the most common ones were in my long term memory. The Western herbs, I still need to dive into it, because I have not use them that often, because I am used to the Chinese herbs, which are already powerful.

One herb I have not mentioned yet, that just popped up in my head, which I need to put in the app is Agrimonia eupatoria. I have tested it out when I had a sore throat and I gargled the decoction and it worked for me.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" This herb is not available in the local store, but online. I bought mine on https://nl.pit-pit.com.

This herb will be added to my app later, because I need to collect all the other Western herbs and then let AI build it in one prompt, otherwise I will go through my credits/tokens really fast.

What is my to go to herbs when I have a sore throat?

Normally I would be very sensitive when it comes to food. I used to get a sore throat easily, e.g. eating crisps, spicy sauces, garlic, baked bread.

Since 3 years I don’t get easily sore throat, because I practice my training that I have learned from Professor Leung from ACHE Research. I have noticed that my body has been improving.

In the early stages, like acute or suddenly you feel a sore throat coming up, I would use Chrysantemum, in Chinese Ju Hua (Flos Chrysanthemi) , which you normally would easily find in local Chinese groceries stores. Even in Chinese restaurants they serve this tea. When you are going to eat deep fried stuff in the Chinese restaurants, make sure you order Chrysantemum tea. Ofcourse it is better not to eat deep fried stuff at all.

Good Chinese restaurants have seasonal soups that helps the body to regulate.

That is why I love Chinese restaurants, most food in Chinese restaurants have medicinal value.

When you have neglected your sore throat, mostly it will worsen and then you need some stronger tea to battle the next stage of sore throat and you can do that by adding Honeysuckle flower or in Chinese Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera japonica), combine those two together and brew a tea from.

In some cases the sore throat can develop in really soreness then you could try mungbean soup.

Severe sore throat case

I had one client who suffered for a week and she could not even drink water, texting me if I have something for her throat.

I instantly made mungbean soup for her and walked to her house (she lives behind my practice) and gave it to her. And she drank it after 15 min should could drink water, because the soreness was reduced.

I also made one for a dear friend of mine who just started a few days. I always want to know what they eat or did, that caused it.

In his case he had some pizza and a lot of garlic, so those are very drying and causes discomfort in the throat. In his case I think those were the triggers. Not everyone will react the same way, ofcourse, but in his case, I think those were his triggers. I have known him for a while and I know what he eats, so that was easy for me to conclude.

So I made him the same dessert/soup and he came to visit me and he ate it on his way home and after 4 hours his pain subsided.

From each client I learn a lot, I like to ask questions, like a detective, scanning through my history in my brains and in my books and then come to a conclusion and then find the proper remedy and observe how the person responds to the remedy. 50% chance.

Dosage is important, real cases when overdosing.

Mungbean, Lu Dou (Vigna radiata). I love this as a dessert, but you can’t eat too much of it, it can cause harm as well, like everything. I have two cases that people overdosed themselves by eating too much, because people say ‘ it is healthy’. One lady 55 year old cooked one package (400gr) and ate it for a week, result, she was bedridden for a week. Another lady 50 year old, also ate almost the full package and fell ill. Such a simple food, incorrect dosages and it becomes toxic.

Like carrots, we accept from carrots that we should not eat too much, the same principle goes for everything, dosage is key.

A good rule of thumb is, a handful of e.g. beans, rice etc or a pinch when we talk about herbs.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" I am lucky to be very flexible and observe how things goes and it went quite smooth. Checking out local stores and market to buy ingredients for the lunch and dinner. I really enjoyed it. The best part was introducing the TCM nutrition to people, explaining how foods can affect people’s health.

Take a simple ingredient that most people know ‘ginger’. When I look around in a restaurant, I see so many people drinking ginger tea with a lot of slices of ginger. Now, you might think, why do I even care about what other people drink? Well, I have studied 2 years Chinese herbalism, beside acupuncture, tuina and qigong. I have learned the basic function of an herb. Did you know that Chinese medicine categorizes herbs into their functions, which meridians they enter, what taste they have and what thermal nature they have. The temperature of ginger is hot. What does that mean? That means when you eat it, it will heat up your body, ginger promotes sweating, that is why in Chinese medicine we often use it to warm up the body. The meridians they mainly enter are Lung, Spleen and Stomach, it has a dispersing nature, going outward, it benefits the Stomach, alleviates nausea, stops coughing and transforms phlegm. Now what most people don’t know are the contraindications, which is also important to know when not to use it, and I find it concerning that people just drink gingertea on a daily basis because ‘everybody’ says ‘it is a healthy herb, it is anti inflammatory’. But do you know where the inflammation is inside the body? It makes a big difference if there is an inflammation in your gut or in your Kidneys. So when should you avoid ginger…when you have nightsweating, sore throat, dry throat, dry skin, dry mouth. But why? Well, remember that ginger has a dispersing function, promote sweating? So if you have dry skin, dry mouth and dry throat it will make it worse, becomes more drying and can cause other symptoms.

So when can you use ginger? So in Chinese medicine we use the yin yang principle, so when the body has cold symptoms, we need to warm it up, when there is heat, we need to get rid of the heat by cooling. So if you have watery diarrhea or watery nasal discharge or watery vomit, and you are feeling cold, but you don’t have dry skin, dry throat, dry mouth or nightsweating then you can use ginger to warm your Stomach. We have a specific term for this cluster of symptoms, in TCM it is called Yin deficiency, we call this pattern differentiation. There is a pattern (watery) that we differentiate (diarrhea). There are different types of diarrhea (watery, foulsmelling, loose stools, dawn diarrhea (early morning), stress induced or due to cold foods). Once we have done a proper intake, we need to find the pattern differentiation, then we need to determine the treatment principle and then we apply the treatment that are skilled in, like acupuncture, herbs, tuina, movements or breathing.

The main objective is to regulate the body, when there is cold, we need to warm up, when there is heat we need to clear the heat, cool the body, when there is dampness, we need to eliminate the dampness (better known as mucus). There are different ways of eliminating dampness, but that is for another posts.

I see so many platforms where people give advice without even doing a proper diagnosis, you can’t blame them, people are very helpful to one and another, and most people just want to help another person. Which is very good, but can we do a little bit better, and properly diagnose first, because it might have worked for you, but does this stranger on the platform has the same symptoms like you and the same constitution. Because in Chinese medicine we can use one herb to treat different kinds of diseases, but we can also use different herbs to use for the same disease.

Always keep in mind that we have 50% chance that is works, but can we do a little bit better. Yes we sure can. That is why education is so important.

How nice would it be if people understand their body better, because they recognize certain symptoms and they know what to eat and to avoid to regulate their body. In the Chinese culture, they grew up with most of the basic knowledge, but can we get that concept into the non-Chinese environment. I think we can, as long as the people are interested to learn. How nice would it be if you knew what to eat when you have watery diarrea or runny nose….but without sore throat etc..right?

During the retreat we will go into each Element (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal) and which corresponds to each Organ (Kidney, Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung) and what foods is good for which organ and what to cook for your constitution and so much more. Stay tuned.

Would you like to know more about the retreat in France, email to info@acheresearch.nl or book a zoom call.

Have a great day..

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a reader-supported publication. The Qi flows effortlessly, especially when I teach, I love teaching. A journey that has changed a lot in my life and is still changing. From not being proud of the Chinese culture to respecting the Chinese culture day by day thanks to Professor Dr. Yan Kwai Leung PhD, who showed me and inspired me the beauty of the Chinese culture and his knowledge and experience in self-healing without using any external interventions, like drugs, herbs, needles, tuina massage, only by breathing and movements.

Dr. Sara Pugh introduced me to Substack, because she is using this for a while and I wanted to create an online audience, because I want to share my knowledge to those who are interested.

I started this Substack because I need to find some ways to create a stable income as divorcing mother, also I need to go on business trips to China for networking for ACHE Research. I have to be able to generate income to support my kids while they are still very young. It gives me stress on how to support myself and my two kids, but it also gave me an opportunity to be creative. I try to answer the question ‘What can I offer people that they can use in their daily life, that can help them using the knowledge that I have gained since I started Traditional Chinese Medicine’. Otherwise all the knowledge will be put to waste. I want to preserve it.

With this substack I hope to build a community who are interested to learn about Traditional Chinese Medicine.

My dream is to create a platform that people can find information about Traditional Chinese Medicine. Where people can get answers, they can’t find elsewhere and without questioning if the information is true. I would like to offer that one-stop-shop place where people can find in one place the information on TCM from Internal TCM to External TCM. From breathing to movements from acupuncture, to acupressure and nutrition and herbs all in one place. It is a beginning.

Since I am a licensed acupuncturist, tuina therapist, Chinese herbalist, qigong instructor, and I am finishing my 2 year constitution based cooking classes and I am on my way for a Master degree in Internal TCM.

I can provide the information from my study books and network of colleagues and my personal experience. Also sharing knowledge on how the body functions from TCM perspective.

There are so much information online, I myself can’t distinguish whether something is correct or not, true or false. Since I was missing that information I thought of creating one to make life easier on finding information, also I want to leave my knowledge behind to the next generation, it saves them time and money on education and find it by themselves. I don’t claim I know everything, but I can do my best to provide the best information possible. At least that is my idea, we will see what the future brings.

My main focus is to teach people how to heal themselves using only breathing and movements based on Ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine, this particular TCM is called internal Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Why is that? We call it internal TCM (ITCM) because we don’t use any external intervention like medicine, drugs, herbs, nutrition or tuina massage to self-heal, we only use breathing and movements to self-heal. Ideal when you are on a holiday and sprained your back, you do your movements and your are good to go. Sounds unrealistic, well I speak of my own experience and my students say the same. But hey, you have to learn it, before you can experience it.

There are many ways to self-heal, many cultures have the knowledge, but what I do is focusing on information from the Chinese Culture, which was written in the Dao De Jing, from Laozi and the book of ZhuangZi. It is al written in those ancient text, and many people have their own interpretations. Just like Professor Dr. Yan Kwai Leung PhD, he has its own interpretation of the ancient Classical text. His interpretation is from the self-healing point of view, which makes it fascinating. He has video footages of his patients that went into spontaneous, similar like going into trance, which he can connect to the ancient Classical texts. Without that experience you will not have a clue, until you have been into spontaneous, then you can relate to the text. I have been into spontaneous many times and I recognize the text and it makes sense to me.

I like this substack to be an interactive one, a community of like minded people who are interested, people asking questions and me answering them as good as possible. I want you to get the best out of it.

There will be three kind of subscription a free one, paid and a founding member.

Free subscription: weekly inspiring newsletter with practical TCM Not sure if I am doing it right, meanwhile using youtube tutorials to understand how Substack works…but at least I am trying to use it. Let’s see how it will go.

Maybe you have read my ‘about’, where I mentioned that I am not a fan of writing, so I am starting to write, because it is important to face the hardship, to conquer the fears and to face them instead of running away from it. I truly belief, that I will become a good writer, because I put effort in it. I like to write like this, just personal messages, nothing formal, because I feel limited, also my dictionary is not that big. My professor kept pushing me to start writing, and I feel a lot of aversion to it, because writing and article for a professor is a whole different level than writing for myself about my life and thoughts. Anyway. I have to start somewhere and I understand I have to write, because then my professor can see if I understand his work and being able to deliver the information to other medical professionals, so the work can be taken serious.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a reader-supported publication. There are some herbs that you can use already to trigger a healing function in your body. Like ginger…most people just drink this, because people say it is healthy, or because they like it. But did you know that when you have night sweats or dry throat and skin it is contraindicated?

So when can you use ginger and why? From my herbal medicine book ginger is ideal for transparent runny nose, watery diarrhea or vomit.

Why is that? Because ginger goes to the Lung meridian and the Stomach meridian, it is warming in nature and it induces sweating. So transparent body fluids (nasal discharge, watery stools, vomit) is an indication for cold inside the body. Ginger helps to warm the body up and expel the cold that is inside the body. It increase your metabolism and you will start sweating. So when your skin is dry, you don’t want to push out more fluids outside your body, you want to keep it inside the body.

Ginger is also very useful when woman have cramps, combine this with brown sugar, it will relieve cramps. Try it and let me know if it works. Because I am always interested when it does not work.

So that is it for today’s post. I am starting to like to write, but I did notice, that I need to find the scientific articles as well, to support my information. I find it important that I don’t make things up, I want people to be able to find the information as well, make it accessible. I want to provide true honest information, because there is enough fake news out there, and I don’t want to be part of it. So I need to do proper homework.

If you like this, please leave a comment with your thoughts, so I can improve. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. I will try to answer them as good as possible.

Have a nice day.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a reader-supported publication.
